Chance to accept world’s renowned technology education in Guangdong

2016-December-9       Source: Newsgd.com
Lots of global leading universities as Carnegie Mellon University and University of Birmingham have "settled" in Guangdong to offer profound educational programs. Next year, another world’s renowned university is about to run its "Guangdong campus" in Shantou.
With years of preparation, the Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) was approved to establish by the Ministry of Education on 5th December. It schedules to recruit 300 students in the fall of 2017 for the BSc programs including chemical engineering, materials engineering, and biotechnology engineering.
Co-established by Shantou University (STU) and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (Technion), GTIIT is backed by investment of more than 4 billion yuan from the provincial and city governments.
It will maintain the same academic standard as Technion's campus in Israel according to the Technion. More than 40 % of its future faculty will be the professors from Technion while others will be recruited globally. The future faculty will spend the first year at Technion’s Haifa campus before starting their career in the Shantou campus.
GTIIT will adopt both domestic and international students. International students will be measured following the Technion’s standards and procedures while domestic students will be judged by their GAO-KAO scores. As the teaching and research carried out in GTIIT will be in English, their English scores in high schools also matter. And all students will eventually grant Technion engineering degrees when graduate.

"I hope we could introduce the leading education concept and innovative ideas from Israel to China through this cooperation," said Li Jiange, the Chancellor of GTIIT, "and eventually build the ‘Silicon Valley’ in South China."
GTIIT will focus on the innovation in fields such as environment, energy and human health. It aims to foster high-caliber talents to boost economic and social development in China.
GTIIT is the first joint technology institute in China. And with its establishment, Guangdong has 4 international cooperative universities, accounting for near 50% of the total number in China.
The establishment of GTIIT echoes Guangdong government’s ambition to develop technology universities. Early in January this year, the provincial government revealed its plan to increase technology universities from 23.4% of the total universities in Guangdong to 40% in 2017, and eventually to 47% in 2020.
"Developing technology universities could provide fundamental talents and technologies for industrial innovations," said Luo Weiqi, Director General of Guangdong Provincial Education Bureau.
