About the Districts in Guangzhou


GUANGZHOU governs ten districts, i.e., Yuexiu, Haizhu, Liwan, Tianhe, Baiyun, Huangpu, Huadu, Panyu, Nansha, Luogang, and two county-level cities Conghua and Zengcheng. Every district has its unique geographic and cultural features as well as business advantages.
Yue Xiu, Prosperous City Heartland
As one of the oldest urban areas in the city Yuexiu District is the birthplace of Guangzhou, which enjoys a long gistory of more than 2,000 years. It is the political centre of Guangzhou as the provincial and municipal governments are both situated inside. 
Commerce
Guangzhou is prosperous in commerce. Yuexiu is just the city' s traditional shopping centre. The well-known showcases include Beijing Pedestrian Street, Nonglinxia Road, Yide-road Dried Seafood Market and Toy Street, Liuhua Clothing Markets, Zhuangyuan-Fang lane of Stationery and fun items, Yanjiang (Riverside) Bar Street, Gaodi Clothing Business Street , Tiancheng-road Market of printing, Taikang-road and Danan-road Markets of home decoration, Jiefang-road Market of Electronics, HuiFu-road Food Street etc. All these have been attracting sea of shoppers, tourists and investors.
Trade Fair
The Chinese Export Commodities Fair is held at the Liuhua Expo Center twice a year. It long functions as a renowned interface of China' s foreign trade and attracts hundreds of thousands of exhibiters and businessmen from all over the world.
New Liwan, Western Town of Tradition and Commerce
Liwan District is one of the old center districts of Guangzhou. The new Liwan District has an area of 64.2 square kilometers and a population of 705,700 after putting administrative area of the former Fangcun District under administration of Liwan District. With over two thousand years of history, Liwan has always been a fascinating place with beautiful sceneries and historic relics and one of the most prosperous commercial centers in Guangzhou.
Liwan District serves as an area connecting Guangzhou with Foshan, Nanhai and Shunde. The traffic is convenient with the network connecting Guangzhou Railway Station, Guangzhou New Baiyun International Airport, Panyu district and Foshan City.
Tianhe, Booming CBD
Located in eastern part of Guangzhou , Tianhe District is the geographical centre of the city. It covers an area of about 139 km2, with a population of 1.2 million. Starting from Tianhe, through convenient and fast road and rail transportation, you can easily reach the new Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport , Guangzhou Huangpu Port , Nansha Port , and every corner of the Pearl River Delta - the manufacturing centre in South China .
Position
Tianhe District, incorporating the functions of commerce, emerging industries, information technology, culture and education, is the central district of Guangzhou. The prosperous economy and commerce within the District have attracted many large shopping malls and class-A office buildings represented by Teem Plaza and CITIC Plaza respectively, leading the District into being one of the most competitive and influential areas in Guangzhou.
Characteristics
Tianhe District adheres to a sustainable development strategy of invigorating the District through Science and Technology, strengthening it with education, building it with care for environment, and positioning it with culture. It strives to create an environment suitable for both business and living and has achieved a sustainable, healthy and rapid development of its national economy. In 2004, the whole District achieved a GDP of 60.5 billion RMB, ranking the first among the ten districts in Guangzhou . The proportion of the three industries are 0.2: 25.18: 74.62. The economic development is featured by highly developed tertiary industry and rapidly developed high-tech industry.
Industrial Guideline
Highlight the development of software industry and vigorously develop modern industry;

Promote the construction of the eastern new business circle near Olympic Sports Centre;

Haizhu, Industrial Land for Multi-development
Haizhu is an industry zone traditionally. As Guangzhou ventures the strategy of Eastern push and southern exploitation, the new urban axis passes through the middle of Haizhu. Its function has been successfully changed to a new modern urban area with business service, finance, tourism, logistics and high-tech industry to develop. 
Being a central island of Guangzhou, Haizhu is the city' s gateway to Pearl River Delta, it has a sound transportation network of the 14 bridges over the Pearl River , Inner- ring Expressway, Southeast- Round -City Expressway, Metro Line 2 and 3.
Haizhu is an advanced well-developed district of the nation in science and education. There are 46 institutions of high learning, including Sun Yet-Sen University, Guangdong University of Business Studies, Guangzhou Academy of Art and South China Sea Institute of Ocean, etc.
There are such high-tech enterprises as Seiko Instruments Ltd. and Lonza Chemical settled in the district. With the further development of Haizhu Scien-tech Park and the implementation of the project of Guanzhou International Biological Island , initiatives will be quicken to promote the development of the high-tech industry.
Baiyun, Transportation Hub and Gateway of Guangzhou
Situated in the west and north of Guangzhou City and covering a land of nearly 900 km 2, Baiyun District has a population of more than 1.7 million with 4 towns and 15 administrative streets under its jurisdiction. Baiyun District is in possession of 6 of the 10 land exits of Guangzhou . Its road density reaches the standard of world medium developed countries. It acts as a transportation hub of Guangzhou and guards the passes of Guangzhou in the directions of northeast, north, northwest and west. It connects well-developed Pearl River Delta in the south and inner land which is full of resources in the north. The new and old Baiyun international airports and the largest railway marshalling yard in south China, and Beijing-Guangzhou, Guangzhou-Shenzhen, Guangzhou-Foshan, beiJing-Zhuhai, Guangzhou-Huizhou, 105, 106, 107 highways or national roads passes through it. Baiyun District enjoys a convenient three-dimensional communication network. In 2004, it has 40.99 billion RMB for GDP with a 12% increase; 51.469 billion RMB for total industrial output with a 14.1% increase. Every main economic index has maintained a good developing tendency.
Huangpu, A Modern Industrial Base
Huangpu District, located in the north of Pearl River Delta and the east of Guangzhou , is in the intersection of Pearl River and the estuary of Dongjiang River . It is 148km away from Shenzhen, and 80 nautical miles apart from Hong Kong. Covering 94.23 square kilometers, Huangpu has a total population of 400,000.
Enjoying abundant tourism resources like "Huangpu Military Academy " and "South China Sea God Temple", Huangpu is a modern industrial base in the east of Guangzhou. It has complete industrial varieties and covers 33 industries including automobile, petroleum, chemical industry, iron and steel, electronics, machinery and food. Over 2000 enterprises, such as Guangzhou Honda, Dongfeng Honda, Sinopec Guangzhou, Guangzhou Port, Swire Guangdong Coca-Cola, Sanyo Electric, General Mills, Bluescope, President Enterprise, Hedy Computer, Blue Moon Biotechnology and CSG Glass are settled in the area.
Huangpu District provides domestic and foreign investors with great potential for business development, thanks to the advantages involving long industrial chain, great volume of logistics, a diversity of traffic by railway, highway and waterway. Huangpu Port , the largest port in South China , whose international shipping lines can reach more than 300 ports in over 100 countries and areas. Vessels from Pearl River can reach Dongjiang River , Xijiang River and Beijiang River , with shipping lines connected to more than 100 domestic ports in China. It possesses six 35,000-tonnage container berths, with a total annual container handling capacity of 331 million TEU and a cargo throughput of 215 million tons. It' s one of the top ten ports around the world in 2004. A convenient transportation network has been built in Huangpu, like Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway and Expressway, 107 national highway, Guangyuan East Express Trunk. They run through the whole district and connect Guangzhou , Shenzhen and Kowloon . No.5, 7 and 9 subway lines are planned to be constructed to run through Huangpu. It takes no more than 30 minutes from Huangpu District to new Baiyun Airport .

Panyu with Historical Gems and Agriculture-bound Economy
Panyu is a new district under the administration of Guangzhou, located in the southeast of Guangzhou.  It is geometrically the center of the Pearl River delta region. Totaling an area of 1313.8 km 2, Panyu is 38 sea miles away from Hong Kong and 42 sea miles from Macao.
Benefited from the opening and reform policy and its advantages in geography, the economy of Panyu has grown rapidly and drastically. Many investors from over 30 countries and regions have launched more than 3000 companies in Panyu including worldwide famous General Electric, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Hitachi, etc. So far, the aggregate utilization of foreign fund is up to 4.411billion USD and 3 pillar industries as photoelectron, jewellery processing and chemical industry were established. According to the statistics, in 2004, the GDP in Panyu was 47.094 billion RMB, an increase of 15.3% over last year, and the total value of import and export in 2004 amounted to 11.873 billion USD, among which the export accounted for 1/3 of the total in Guangzhou city.
