Facing the challenging economic and financial situation around the world, international capacity cooperation has been an important engine for enhancing transnational investment and promoting world economy growth.
On October 29, the China-ASEAN Production Capacity Cooperation Symposium was held at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) in Guangzhou. They made analysis and discussion on the successful experiences and investment methods of outbound infrastructure construction, in the hope of promoting the cooperation of research and innovation to realize common development.
2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the dialogue relationship between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Now China is the biggest trade partner of ASEAN.
John Wong, Professor and Academic Adviser to the East Asian Institute of the National University of Singapore, believed that production capacity cooperation can bring win-win development for both China and ASEAN countries. “China has established a strong relation with ASEAN over the years, which will provide a very favorable factor for cooperation, so it’s promising for both sides to achieve significant cooperation in production capacity,” said John Wong.
Guangdong has been taking the opportunity of constructing the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road to deepen its exchanges and cooperation with ASEAN countries. In 2015 the total value of import and export trade between Guangdong and ASEAN countries reaches 113.21 billion USD, accounting for 24% of the total value of import and export trade between China and ASEAN countries.
Sui Guangjun, Party Secretary of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Executive Vice-President of Guangdong Institute for International Strategies, introduced that Guangdong and ASEAN countries have similarities and competitiveness in resource endowment, industrial structure and export market, but also have obvious distinctness and stronger complementary advantage, so Guangdong and ASEAN countries have bright prospects for economic and trade cooperation as well as production capacity cooperation.

Bounpan, Consul General of Laos PDR in Guangzhou, said that Laos and Guangdong maintain close trade and economic ties. The import and export volume between Laos and Guangdong was 210 million USD in 2013, accounting for 0.1% of Guangdong’s value of import and export, which means there is still great potential for cooperation between Laos and Guangdong.
Since Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Cambodia from October 13 to 14 led to the signing of 31 cooperation documents, deepening the traditional friendship and comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries, Guangdong and Cambodia are embracing a better time for cooperation.

Heng Poeu, Consul General of Royal Cambodia in Guangzhou told the reporter that Guangdong plays a very important role in the Belt and Road Initiative, and Cambodia and Guangdong can cooperate in many fields, especially investment, heavy industry and tourism. Heng Poeu also mentioned that the 2016 MSR-EXPO is a very opportunity for Cambodian products to show to Chinese market.
Guangdong and Singapore have been cooperating closely in recent years. “The import and export trade volume between Guangdong and Singapore is 19.6 billion USD in 2015, which is about one fifth of the total trade volume between China and Singapore,” said Chua Teng Hoe, Consul General of Singapore in Guangzhou, “And the number remains strong in 2016.”
According to Chua Teng Hoe, Guangdong has many strengths in many sectors, including Guangzhou as a transportation hub and millennial trading center, Shenzhen very good in high tech and innovative industry, Foshan and Dongguan very good in manufacture, while Singapore has advantages in finance, electronics and petrochemical industry, so Guangdong and Singapore can do a lot, especially complementary cooperations.
