The 2016 China Urban Sustainability Index (USI 2016) released on April 14 ranks its top 10 cities in China as Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Zhoushan, Zhuhai, Ningbo, Guangzhou, Weihai, Huzhou, Zhongshan, and Shaoxing -- most of them in Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Shandong provinces. Xiamen, Dalian, Fuzhou, Beijing, Changsha, and Yantai have fallen out of top 10 since being listed in 2011.
The McKinsey & Company Urban China Initiative (UCI) report shows that most Chinese cities are steadily gaining in social and economic improvement. The gap in the economic volume for large and medium-sized cities compared to small cities, it states, has tended to grow, however, in the past three years.
According to its website: "McKinsey & Company is a worldwide management consulting firm. It conducts qualitative and quantitative analysis in order to evaluate management decisions across the public and private sectors."
The USI 2016 reportedly is a result of calculations and analysis of 23 indexes. These cover economy, society, resources, and environment data from 185 prefecture-level cities from 2006 to 2014. The research and ranking helps to guide China's urban sustainable development.
Moreover, it points out that the cultivation and enhancement of innovation will show how cities can break through the sustainable development bottleneck. Therefore, USI 2016 also conducted quantitative research on 16 indexes from 164 sample cities based on innovation space, input, and output. The top 10 cities on this list are Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Wuhan, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Xi'an, and Zhongshan.
UCI was established in 2011 by McKinsey & Co as a collaborative project with the Tsinghua University School of Public Policy & Management and Columbia University. It maintains a strategic partnership with the Chinese Society of Urban Studies, and is advised and funded by domestic and multinational corporations.
