As a key player in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Guangzhou is becoming the first choice for international companies as a route to market in the Greater Bay, highlighting openness and innovation. At present, 297 of Fortune 500 enterprises have already started up 921 projects in the city.
Since 2017, the city has attracted 334 projects with an investment value of up to 531 billion Yuan, mainly in the fields of new generation information technology, artificial intelligence, bio-pharmaceuticals (IAB), new energy and new materials (NEM).
For instance, Cisco Systems started a smart city project in Panyu District last April. The project is enabling a gradual breakthrough in the electronic information technology industry in Guangzhou.
“Guangzhou is an international trade center, a comprehensive transportation hub, advanced manufacturing and electronic information industry base. It is strong in R & D, technology, innovation, service, talents and logistics, etc, “ said Owen Chan, Chairman and CEO of Cisco Greater China.
Cisco hopes to build the Guangzhou Smart City as a pilot project, then promote the concept to other cities in the Pearl River Delta region like Huizhou, where they started the Tonghu Science City project last December.
Guangzhou will play a key role as a “sharer” in the Greater Bay since its excellent infrastructure can enhance the area’s competitiveness, according to guests at the China Development Forum held in Beijing last month.
“We are willing to further cooperate with Guangzhou on Industry 4.0, to help Greater Bay’s small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises to undertake industrial upgrading,” said Cedrik Neike, member of the managing board of Siemens AG.
He added that Greater Bay will compete with world-class bay areas including New York Bay Area, San Francisco Bay Area, Tokyo Bay Area.
“I think Guangzhou is the best city for starting up a business, especially in terms of cutting-edge technology such as AI. Since all types of technology are well-developed in Guangzhou, there is a lot of talent already established for the development of Greater Bay Area in future, ” said Tony Han, CEO of Jingchi.ai at a promotion roadshow held for Guangzhou in Boao recently.
Now, a number of major infrastructure projects beneficial to the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area are being fast tracked.
Effective steps in encouraging the free flow of talent, goods, capital and information will be sped up as the general plans of the Greater Bay Area are released soon.
