Guangzhou Port establishes sister port relationship with Malacca Port

Guangzhou Port and Malacca Port signed an agreement on establishing Sister Port Relationship recently. Malacca Port became the 38th sister port of Guangzhou Port.
Malaysia has always been China’s largest trading partner in ASEAN. The bilateral trading volume between two countries reaches hundred billion US dollars, accounting for one fifth of the total trading volume between China and ASEAN.
The Strait of Malacca is also a strategic location connecting the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. A deep water sea port, Melaka Gateway Port, was announced to built in Malacca with the cooperation of China’s companies in October, 2016.
‘On an annual basis, over nearly 100,000 vessels ply the Strait of Malacca.’said Liow Tiong Lai, Malaysian Minister of Transport, ‘Clearly, there is significant opportunity and potential for growth.’

‘The container throughput of the Guangzhou Port will reach 18,680,000 TEUs at the end of 2016,’said Chang Min, Director General of the Guangzhou Port Authority, ‘the establishment of the sister relationship could offer enormous opportunities to relative enterprises of both ports.’
In accordance with the Belt and Road initiative, the agreement encourages communication and cooperation between Guangzhou Port and Malacca Port on infrastructural construction, logistics service and etc.
‘We hope the cooperation with Guangzhou Port could be deepened through the increase of ship routes, trade volume and information sharing on the ports’scientific innovations.’said Tan Sri Kong Cho Ha, Chairman of the Malacca Port Authority.
