Dr. Hans d’ Orville, from UNESCO is a new advisor for ICCFED, however, he is an old friend of Guangdong and has brought precious suggestions for Guangdong’s “Internet+” initiative and cultural development. He used three words -- dynamic, growing and cosmopolitan to point out the characters of Guangdong province.
Dr. Hans’ close relationship with Guangdong
According to Dr. Hans, he has a lot of relationship with Guangdong. “I have been to Guangdong many times. My first time to Guangdong was in 2008 when served as a cultural advisor for the organizing committee of the 2010 Asian Games,” said Hans. And his wife had ever organized the major concert at Guangzhou Opera House on the opening day of 2010 Asian Games. Besides, Dr. Hans had many interactions with Xu Ruisheng, who was vice mayor of Guangzhou and deputy secretary-general of the Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee then.
“I have been to Southern China University of Technology for several times and worked as an honorary professor on public policy,” Hans added. Last week, Hans had a speech on the Asian University Forum at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and was employed as an honorary professor by the university.
He has made good friends there like Professor Zhang Hang, a famous artist from South China Normal University. Hans sometimes come to see and talk with him and his students.
Beyond Guangzhou, Hans also has a strong relationship with Shenzhen. In Hans’ saying, Shenzhen is a creative city and has cooperation with UNESCO, so they have organized several conferences in Shenzhen. In addition, Hans’ wife is one of the first non-Chinese who was allowed to establish a company in Qianhai.
Hence, Hans is quite familiar with Guangdong Province and has been witnessing its development for years.
“Internet+”: sky is the limit
For this conference, Dr. Hans mainly concerns about how Guangdong to introduce innovation, advanced technologies into its economy and how it can take best advantage of the potential of “Internet+”, introducing Internet technologies and facilities into production, consumption, education, etc.
As far as Dr. Hans’ concern, China’s “Internet+” Initiative is right on the target because Internet can play a critical role in many areas now and even becomes a production tool. For Guangdong, it is a large production province, hence introducing “Internet” as a productive measure is very important.
In addition to economy, Internet can also link with culture, education, etc.
Internet can plus culture. It can be reflected in cultural exchanges as well as exchanges between scientists. For instance, China and America can have new approaches for cultural exchanges through scientists’ research online to study Dun Huang (a western historic country in Gansu Province)’s culture. For contemporary arts, art works can be created and visited through the Internet as well.
Internet can plus education. Dr. Hans suggests Guangdong to introduce Internet educational system, called the “Massive Open Online Course” (MOOCS) by which students can listen to professors from Harvard, Paris, Berlin, Australia but no need to travel there or study in the university. It brings a revolution for studies.
Guangdong is competing for a better cultural presence
In Dr. Hans’ opinion, culture is pretty important because it defines the attraction of cities for people to live, stay and move here.
Hans had ever suggested Guangdong government to set up foundations for young artists. “Last year I said, it would be good if the government could foster the development of young artists, because the national and international (level) is very competitive, so you must have some support in order to present yourself. I still think it is a good idea and it is an important part of the cultural elements,” said Dr. Hans.
"I definitely believe that Guangzhou should engage in strengthening its cultural presence since it has a lot of diverse people, migrants," Hans suggested. Diversity is a strength, but not a danger, Guangdong should take advantage of this diversity to see how open-minded the city and the province can reach.
Furthermore, people's cultural life in Guangdong is very vibrant, they have many museums and art galleries. In short, people have been witnessing Guangdong's competition for a better cultural presence.
